Continental's Gator Hardshell features a tough Duraskin polyamide mesh casing with an additional Poly-X breaker strip under the entire width of the tread. Sharing the bead-to-bead protection of DuraSkin, the Hardshell casing wraps further into the sidewall and an extra-wide PolyX Breaker covers the entire tread strip from shoulder-to-shoulder. Added material in the tread strip not only improves mileage, but lends yet another degree of puncture resistance.
Vectran™ Breaker The innovation in puncture protection. Vectran™ is a multifibred thermoplastic yarn, made of melted Vectra™ Liquid Crystal Polymer. Vectran™ is the only LCP fibre in the world, which is made using a spinning process. Reinforcing and matrix fibres made of Vectran™, are lightweight, extremely durable, have reliable longevity and are five times stronger as steel. With a layer (breaker) of Vectran™ under the tread, the tyre is protected from breakdowns more efficiently than with a Nylon Double Breaker. This is because a single Vectran™ layer is lighter, more flexible and stronger than the two nylon layers.

I've only put about 50 miles on my new conti hardshell tires and only on dry pavement but they have a more compliant ride than their specialized counterpart. They were relatively easy to mount. If they resist damage and punctures I'll be exceedingly happy.
